Therapeutic indications

Metformin is indicated for the treatment of:

• Gout
• Lupus erythematosus

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
• Hypersensitivity to the drug, or to any of the excipients.

• Weakness and dizziness
• Abdominal pain and discomfort
• Increases in bowel pain, flatulence, and loose stools

Since May 1, 2022, there have been very few new side effects reported in clinical trials with metformin. Most of them disappeared on review. Common side effects reported included:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain

• Decreased libido
• Erectile dysfunction

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The use of metformin during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended. Metformin should not be used in pregnant women or in patients with renal impairment. There are no studies that report the safety and effectiveness of metformin in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Metformin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the excipients.

Use of metformin during or up to 12 months after renal transplantation is not recommended in a patient with a history of glomerular nephritis.

• Reducing the risk of hypoglycemia in patients with a history of diabetes mellitus

The overdose of metformin requires immediate medical attention. The patient should be treated as described in the leaflet
